Anak Krakatau volcano activity downgraded to Level II Warning

The Geological Agency of Indonesia has downgraded the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait from Level III (Alert) to Level II (Warning) as of September 21, 2026. The decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of declining volcanic activity and deformation data showing deflation.

Since being raised to Alert status on July 2, the volcano recorded 224 eruptions through September 3. This included a continuous 25-hour eruption period between September 4 and September 6, which produced lava flows moving toward the northwest, west, and southwest. While volcanic ash previously impacted Greater Jakarta and caused airport closures, recent seismic records show significantly reduced activity.

Authorities have issued safety recommendations prohibiting the public, tourists, and hikers from entering a two-kilometer radius around the crater due to risks of incandescent rock ejections and heavy ashfall. Residents in coastal areas of Banten and Lampung are advised to remain calm and disregard rumors regarding potential tsunamis.
