Çanakkale cemetery worker forms bond with local squirrels

Baran Aladağ, a 41-year-old employee at the Çanakkale City Cemetery in Turkey, has developed a unique bond with a population of approximately 50 squirrels living within the cemetery grounds.

What began as Aladağ leaving nuts on graves for two squirrels has grown into a significant relationship where the animals now eat directly from his hand. Aladağ provides them with hazelnuts, pistachios, and walnuts every morning. Some of the squirrels have been given names such as Boncuk, Can, Yiğit, Zeytin, and Badem.

The phenomenon has attracted attention from locals and international visitors alike, many of whom travel long distances to witness the interaction. The practice has received support from local philanthropists and Çanakkale Mayor Muharrem Erkek, who has contributed food for the animals. While Aladağ notes receiving mixed reactions from the public, the squirrels have become unofficial mascots of the cemetery.
