Anambra communities face crisis from erosion, flooding, and insecurity

Communities in Anambra State are facing severe crises driven by environmental degradation, insecurity, and failing infrastructure. In the Okoluche Estate of Ikenga Ogidi, residents have reported the loss of four lives due to a combination of flooding and rising crime. The Okoluche Landlords Association noted that deplorable road conditions have turned access points into death traps, facilitating kidnappings and armed robberies. Despite residents spending over 25 million naira on self-help drainage and road repairs, heavy flooding continues to cause massive gully erosion and submerge the estate.

In the Uga Community of Aguata Local Government Area, sand mining activities have exacerbated gully erosion, reportedly resulting in 15 deaths and leaving approximately 200 buildings at risk of collapse. Residents claim that heavy tipper traffic from mining sites has also destroyed newly constructed roads. While the Anambra State government has banned sand excavation in certain council areas and established a task force to monitor the practice, locals report that insecurity persists, allegedly fueled by youths employed by mining interests to disrupt community stability.
