Anambra Governor pardons jailed native doctor and appoints him ambassador

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has granted a pardon to Chidozie Nwangwu, a popular native doctor known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, using the prerogative of mercy. Nwangwu had been serving an 11-month prison sentence following a plea bargain related to charges of promoting money rituals and quick wealth. As part of his rehabilitation, Nwangwu has been appointed as an Ambassador for Youth Reformation in the state, a role intended to help him promote positive social change and renounce previous fetish practices.

In a separate legal development, an Anambra State High Court sentenced another native doctor, Ekene Igboekweze (also known as ‘Eke Hit’), to 12 years in prison. Igboekweze was convicted on charges involving conspiracy, kidnapping, and money rituals. The court's decision follows the implementation of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, which prohibits native doctors from claiming to facilitate wealth through rituals or preparing charms for criminal activities.

Additionally, the Anambra State Attorney General, Tobechukwu Nweke, is encouraging defendants in non-violent cases to utilize plea bargaining. This initiative aims to decongest correctional centers and provide a balanced mechanism for justice, allowing for non-custodial sentences or reduced prison terms while ensuring victims are compensated.
