Anambra Senator urges Nigerian government to declare erosion site a disaster zone

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to declare the Idemili North and South Local Government Areas an ‘erosion disaster zone’.

Following an assessment of a severe gully erosion site at Ugama in the Obosi Community, Umeh stated that the scale of the environmental damage requires urgent federal intervention and the involvement of international agencies. He noted that the erosion is ravaging multiple communities, including Obosi, Nkpor, Ogidi, and Umuoji.

Umeh indicated that he intends to formally petition the Minister of Environment and the President, as well as present a motion in the Senate, to address the need for proper flood water channelization and soil stabilization in the region.
