Anambra communal clash leaves five dead and shuts Otuocha Market

A violent communal dispute over a land boundary between the Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam communities in Anambra State has resulted in at least five deaths and significant property destruction. The conflict reportedly erupted when members of the Aguleri community attempted to install a signpost and security cameras in a disputed area, a move resisted by Umuoba-Anam.

The violence led to the burning of several houses, shops, and a rice processing factory. In some reports, the palace of the Aguleri traditional ruler was also targeted. Following the escalation, the Anambra State Government, under the instruction of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, ordered the immediate closure of Otuocha Market to halt economic activity and allow for investigations.

Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, who chairs the State Boundary Committee, emphasized that local leaders do not have the authority to determine boundaries without state involvement. While traditional rulers from both sides have appealed for peace and restraint, security agencies are working to restore order and investigate the incidents.
