Anambra State firefighters avert tanker explosion in Onitsha
A major explosion was averted in Onitsha, Anambra State, after a 40-foot tanker loaded with petroleum products lost control and overturned on the Onitsha-Awka Expressway. The incident, which occurred near Toronto Hospital and Upper Iweka, reportedly caused panic among motorists, traders, and residents who feared a massive fire.
Reports indicate the accident may have been caused by a steering system failure while the driver was navigating a poor section of the road. While the overturned vehicle caused significant traffic obstructions and forced authorities to divert commuters, no casualties were recorded.
Emergency responders from the Anambra State Fire Service, including personnel from the newly commissioned Fegge station, arrived promptly at the scene. Firefighters utilized water to neutralize potential ignition sources and prevent a fire outbreak. Chief Emeka Orji, the Mayor of Onitsha South Local Government Area, noted that this marked the first major emergency response by the newly established fire service facility.
