Anambra State to demolish thousands of buildings for new six-lane road
The Anambra State Government has announced plans to demolish between 5,075 and 5,775 buildings to facilitate the construction of a six-lane road along the Second Niger Bridge corridor in the Nkwelle-Ezunaka area of Oyi Local Government Area.
During the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) annual general meeting in Awka, Commissioner for Works Okey Ezeobi attributed the necessity of such large-scale demolitions to a historical lack of urban planning. He noted that the scale of the project is a consequence of failing to prepare for population growth and infrastructure needs in previous years.
The commissioner also discussed the state’s long-term infrastructure vision, which includes the development of a second airport and the securing of land for a third airport by 2070 to accommodate future development and increasing population density.
