Anambra State traditional leadership faces political and community disputes

Traditional leadership and political influence are facing scrutiny in Anambra State, Nigeria. Following the conferment of a chieftaincy title on First Lady Oluremi Tinubu by Igwe Obosi, critics have questioned the politicization of traditional institutions. One critic argued that such honors do not guarantee political support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-East region.

Separately, the Nsugbe Development Union has appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to intervene in a dispute regarding the selection of a new traditional ruler for the Nsugbe community. The union expressed opposition to what they described as an attempt to impose a leader without lawful consent, alleging that the election process violated local customs and ignored a subsisting High Court order. The community leaders urged the state government to respect judicial proceedings and initiate consultations to ensure a broadly acceptable outcome.
