Anand Mahindra and S. Somanath appointed to RBI Central Board
The Indian government has announced key appointments to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Central Board. Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, has been reappointed as a part-time, non-official director for a four-year term effective August 20, 2026.
Additionally, former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S. Somanath has been appointed as a part-time, non-official director on the board for a four-year term, also effective August 20, 2026. Somanath, an aerospace engineer who led ISRO during the Chandrayaan-3 mission, transitions from space technology leadership to the central bank's governing body.
The RBI Central Board is responsible for overseeing the central bank's operations, including monetary policy, currency management, and banking regulation. The board consists of the governor, four deputy governors, ten directors from various fields, two government officials, and four directors representing local boards.
