Anatel and UFSC launch digital book on sustainable telecommunications

Anatel and the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) have released a digital book titled ‘Introduction to Sustainable Telecommunications’. Organized by Anatel counselor Alexandre Freire and Roberto Carlos dos Santos Pacheco, the publication is a product of the Anatel-S Program, a cooperation initiative designed to engage agency staff in sustainability challenges.

The book explores Sustainable Telecommunications (TCS) as an integrated field that connects technology with environmental impact, social inclusion, economic development, regulation, and governance. It specifically examines how the expansion of 5G, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and data centers increases digital infrastructure capacity while simultaneously raising demands for energy and natural resources.

Key topics addressed include the management of electronic waste, the use of rare materials, interoperability, and the socio-technical ecosystem involving companies, regulators, governments, and civil society. The first edition is available for free in digital format.
