Anatel extends Brazil's satellite direct-to-device testing sandbox until 2029

Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has extended its regulatory sandbox for direct-to-device (D2D) technology until April 22, 2029. This experimental environment allows for direct communication between satellites and standard mobile devices without the need for external antennas or specialized hardware.

The extension, which follows a request from Telefônica Brasil, provides additional time for representative testing. The updated rules specify that tested applications may have a commercial character and that there is no limit on the number of participating mobile stations. Participants must report the number of associated terminals and details regarding the satellite system used.

Anatel’s oversight aims to ensure that these satellite-to-phone connections do not interfere with existing terrestrial telecommunications networks. The sandbox allows for the temporary use of radio frequencies intended for Personal Mobile Services (SMP) by satellite systems, facilitating connectivity in remote or isolated areas.
