Anatel negotiates sanctions with Claro and TIM while ruling on Oi sale

Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) is engaging with major operators to discuss alternatives to regulatory sanctions. The agency has sent notices to Claro and TIM to explore options regarding the fulfillment of specific obligations before a final decision is made by the Board of Directors.

For Claro, the discussion involves 5G coverage targets in the 2.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz frequency bands. Anatel has proposed an intermediate solution that would involve accelerating certain coverage milestones by one year. For TIM, the matter concerns the installation of 4G Radio Base Stations to serve a specific logistics battalion in Barueri, São Paulo.

Separately, Anatel ruled that Oi remains responsible for its Fixed Switched Telephone Service (STFC) and related regulatory obligations despite the approved sale of its telephony services unit (UPI) to Método Telecomunicações. The agency determined that the sale does not automatically transfer authorizations or responsibilities; Oi will maintain these duties until the transaction is finalized and regulatory conditions are met.
