Anatel reviews IoT regulation as Brazil's connected device market grows

Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has opened a public consultation to re-evaluate the regulation of the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications market. The agency reports that the country has approximately 30 million accesses linked to these technologies, representing 11% of all mobile connections currently in operation.

Data from Anatel showed a 9.9% increase in IoT accesses in 2024, rising from 43 million to 47.3 million in a single year. This growth is largely driven by M2M chips used in vehicle and fleet tracking. This surge is placing increased pressure on asset monitoring centers to process massive volumes of real-time data.

André Luiz Ota, CEO of the systems engineering firm Ikonn, noted that the sector is undergoing a ‘natural purge.’ He stated that fragile platforms are losing ground to architectures designed for large-scale operations, as companies move away from cheap, generic software toward high-availability ecosystems.
