Aníbal Canelón Aguirre transferred to U.S. to face federal charges

Aníbal Alexander Canelón Aguirre, known as “Prometheus” or “The Engineer,” has been transferred to the United States to face federal charges. Canelón Aguirre, a 50-year-old Venezuelan national, was recently apprehended by the U.S. Coast Guard in international waters following his capture in Venezuela.

He is identified by the FBI as the first cybercriminal to be included on its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. Prosecutors allege he led a sophisticated international financial network linked to the Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan criminal organization designated by the U.S. as a foreign terrorist organization.

The indictment focuses on an ATM “jackpotting” scheme that allegedly affected financial institutions across 47 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. Canelón Aguirre is accused of developing “Ploutus,” a specialized malware designed to force ATMs to dispense cash while simultaneously deleting system files to evade forensic detection.

Canelón Aguirre appeared in a federal court in Nebraska on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges including bank fraud, bank burglary, computer fraud, money laundering, and providing material support to terrorists. Judge Michael D. Nelson ordered that he remain in custody pending trial.
