ANC launches 2026 local government election manifesto in Johannesburg

The African National Congress (ANC) has launched its manifesto for the upcoming 2026 local government elections at Riverside Park near Diepsloot, Johannesburg. ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed confidence in a victory despite the party's recent loss of its parliamentary majority and declining support in previous local elections.

The manifesto focuses on improving service delivery, specifically regarding water, electricity, and infrastructure. To address corruption, the party has introduced an integrity commission and a ‘step-aside’ rule, which requires members accused of serious crimes in court to vacate their positions until their cases are resolved.

Ramaphosa stated that every ANC-led municipality will develop a localized implementation plan. He mandated that mayors and councillors establish service delivery baselines and publish their priorities within their first 100 days in office. Additionally, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi noted that the manifesto reflects lessons learned from past leadership and capacity limitations to better address community needs.
