ANC names Johannesburg mayoral finalists

The African National Congress (ANC) has announced its shortlist of potential mayoral candidates for Johannesburg ahead of the local government elections on November 4. The finalists include current Mayor Dada Morero, Deputy Mayor Loyiso Masuku, and Reverend Frank Chikane, who leads the party’s Integrity Commission.

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula addressed rumors regarding Chikane’s status, dismissing reports that the 75-year-old candidate had withdrawn from the race due to health or safety concerns. While some sources suggested Chikane’s family advised him to step down, Mbalula characterized such claims as false.

Political analysts have noted that the delay in finalizing mayoral candidates may signal internal trust issues or incomplete selection processes within the party. The ANC faces a challenging election cycle marked by concerns over service delivery, financial pressures, and coalition instability in key municipalities.
