ANCAP updates safety protocols to address intrusive driver assistance systems

ANCAP, the independent vehicle safety rating organization, is updating its protocols to address the intrusive nature of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Chief Executive Carla Hoorweg stated that the organization is shifting its focus beyond whether these systems function to whether they are so annoying or intrusive that drivers choose to disable them.

The new assessment protocols will include real-world road testing alongside traditional track tests. Engineers will evaluate how systems like lane support and speed assistance are calibrated for local conditions and assess the level of driver distraction caused by warnings.

Hoorweg noted that ANCAP does not require audible alerts, such as beeping, and encourages manufacturers to explore alternative warning methods like visual prompts or haptic feedback through the steering wheel to ensure safety features remain active and helpful rather than irritating.
