Ancient 3,000‑Year‑Old Stone Circles Discovered in Karur, Tamil Nadu

Archaeologists have identified a cluster of about 50 stone‑circle burial structures dating back roughly 3,000 years in the Poovambadi area behind the Karuppan Temple in Karur district, near Krishnarayapuram, Tamil Nadu. The circles, made of large and medium stones, resemble similar prehistoric sites previously recorded in other parts of Tamil Nadu such as Kottamalai and Sannur. Officials from the state archaeology department, including officer Nandakumar, and Krishnarayapuram taluk magistrate Mohanraj inspected the site, which lies on 1.98 acres of land belonging to the Sri Lakshmi Narayana Temple. The department plans to compile a report and submit it to the government for preservation, noting that such structures provide evidence of early Tamil civilization that may predate contemporary Egyptian sites.
