Ancient 800-year-old tree discovered in Vinh Long, Vietnam

An ancient dipterocarp tree, estimated by local residents to be between 700 and 800 years old, has drawn attention in Vinh Long province, Vietnam. Located near Son Thong road in Nguyet Hoa ward, the tree stands approximately 25 meters tall with a massive base measuring about 7 meters in width.

The tree is locally known as the “upside-down” tree due to its unusual shape and a long-standing folk legend. According to local lore, a high monk once attempted to plant several dipterocarp trees by placing the tops into the ground instead of the roots; this specific tree is said to be the only survivor of that attempt. While the tree's unique twisted trunk and umbrella-like canopy are physically evident, the 800-year age and the planting legend remain based on oral tradition rather than scientific verification.
