Ancient 850 BC Burial Uncovered in El Salvador with Hands Clutching Turtle Vessel

Archaeologists excavating a site in Antiguo Cuscatlán, on the outskirts of San Salvador, uncovered a human skeleton dating to around 850 BC. The individual was buried face‑down, its hands still wrapped around a finely crafted ceramic vessel shaped like a sea turtle.

The burial was sealed for nearly three millennia by a layer of volcanic ash, preserving the remains and offering rare insight into ritual practices of the Early Preclassic period in Central America. Researchers note that while the identity of the person remains unknown, the context highlights complex ceremonial behavior long before the classic Maya civilization.
