Ancient 854-year-old plane tree in Muğla attracts historical interest
An 854-year-old ancient plane tree in the Yatağan district of Muğla, Turkey, has gained attention as a significant historical and natural monument. Located in the Bozüyük neighborhood, the tree is famously associated with Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who is said to have rested in its shade during his Rhodes campaign.
The tree stands 30 meters tall with a trunk diameter of 6 meters and a canopy diameter of 35 meters. It was officially registered as a protected monument in 1996. To preserve the tree after it began to decay and split in 2011, an expert team from Ege University's Faculty of Agriculture performed a specialized orthopedic operation, a first for such a tree in Turkey.
Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Murat Kurum recently highlighted the tree on social media, describing it as a ‘witness to time’ and a ‘heritage of nature.’ Nearby historical structures, including a mosque, a bridge, and an inn used by soldiers during the Ottoman era, have also been restored by the Muğla Governorship.
