Ancient Elis archaeological site visited by MEP Nikos Papandreou

European Parliament Member Nikos Papandreou and the Mayor of Aigialeia, P. Andriopoulos, visited the archaeological site of Ancient Elis on August 26. The delegation was hosted by archaeologist Dora Katsonopoulou, the director of the research team and President of the Society of Friends of Ancient Elis.

During the visit, officials were briefed on the ongoing annual protection and maintenance works at the site. Katsonopoulou detailed the historical significance of the area, noting its rebirth following the earthquake of 373 BC and its role in the socio-economic life of ancient Aigialeia. The site is home to one of the best-preserved ancient textile production and dyeing workshops in the Corinthian Gulf.

The visitors also met with research students and Mariza Kormann, who manages the project’s digital component. Results from these digital studies are expected to be presented at an upcoming international conference in Aegio this October.
