Ancient Europos site in Kilkis receives new archaeological infrastructure

Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni has inaugurated new infrastructure projects at the ancient archaeological site of Europos in Kilkis. The upgrades include new lighting systems to enhance security and aesthetics, as well as a protective shelter for a Hellenistic ceramic kiln.

Ancient Europos, historically referred to as ‘Europon Polisin’, is noted for its historical significance in Macedonia and is identified in historical records as the birthplace of Seleucus I Nicator, founder of the Seleucid dynasty. The site is being developed as a cultural landmark and a developmental resource for the Kilkis region.

In addition to the physical protections, a new Information Operations Center has been established to educate visitors on the history of the ancient city and its necropolises. The site is intended to serve as a living cultural space for modern events under the supervision of the local Ephorate of Antiquities. Meanwhile, the Kilkis Archaeological Museum is undergoing reorganization and expansion to accommodate new findings.
