Belagavi labourers discover 14 ancient gold coins during excavation

Labourers working under the VB G-RAM-G scheme in Inchal village, Savadatti taluk, discovered 14 ancient gold coins during excavation work. The coins, found inside a clay pot, have a combined weight of approximately 54.8 grams.

Preliminary assessments by local goldsmiths estimate the market value of the coins at roughly Rs 8.20 to 8.30 lakh. However, officials noted that the historical and archaeological value could far exceed this figure. The coins feature an elephant motif, a symbol associated with the Ganga dynasty that ruled parts of Karnataka. Historians suggest the coins may date back between the 10th and 15th centuries.

The workers demonstrated significant integrity by immediately reporting the find to the local gram panchayat and handing the coins over to the administration. The coins have been deposited into the government treasury, and the district administration is seeking an expert assessment from the Archaeology Department to confirm their exact age, origin, and historical significance.
