Ancient gold treasures discovered in Rhypes, Greece

Archaeological excavations in the Achaia region of the Peloponnese, Greece, have uncovered gold treasures and funerary monuments dating back approximately 2,300 years. The findings were located at the Trapeza plateau in the ancient city of Rhypes, a significant community center during antiquity.

Discovered within the Gamma Building, the artifacts include gold earrings decorated with lion heads, an earring featuring a winged Eros, gold rings, a necklace with lion busts, and funerary coins. The sophistication of these items suggests that the individuals interred at the site held high social status.

Researchers believe the objects are part of a monumental architectural complex known as a ‘heroon’—a structure built to honor or worship a heroic or highly important figure. While the site has been identified, the specific identity of the individual being commemorated remains unknown.
