Ancient Greek city-states and the evolution of the polis
The history of ancient Greek city-states, or poleis, was defined by functional independence and intense rivalry. While sharing a common language, mythology, and the Olympic Games, these city-states often treated neighboring settlements as foreign enemies.
Beginning in the 8th century BC during the Archaic period, the formation of the polis triggered widespread Greek colonization, extending settlements from the Black Sea to southern Spain. The polis served as a self-sufficient civic world where citizens held primary loyalty to their specific city-state above all other regional or familial ties.
