Ancient Kyoto Cultural Heritage sites encompass 17 UNESCO assets

The Cultural Properties of Ancient Kyoto, a UNESCO World Heritage site, comprises 17 component assets located in Kyoto, Uji, and Otsu. These sites reflect over a millennium of Japanese history, serving as centers for culture, politics, and religion from the establishment of Heian-kyo in 794 until the capital moved to Tokyo in the Meiji era.

The heritage sites showcase various architectural styles, including the traditional Wayo style used in shrines and temples up to the 12th century, and the highly decorative Momoyama style from the late 16th to early 17th centuries. The collection also includes significant examples of Japanese garden design that has influenced global landscaping.

A prominent site within this heritage is Kiyomizu-dera, an ancient temple in Kyoto with approximately 1,250 years of history. Known for its massive wooden stage built without nails using a traditional cantilevered construction method, the temple is dedicated to Kannon and remains a major spiritual destination. Other significant assets include Enryaku-ji in Shiga Prefecture.
