Ancient Olympia undergoes new €4 million restoration phase
The Greek Ministry of Culture has launched a new phase of restoration and preservation projects at the Ancient Olympia archaeological site. With a total budget of approximately €4 million, the initiative aims to protect historical remains, expand areas accessible to the public, and enhance the visitor experience.
The current phase includes three major projects: the restoration and showcasing of the Roman Octagon, also known as the ‘House of Nero’; the third phase of excavation and presentation of the Gymnasium; and the protection and restoration of the retaining wall of the Treasuries on Mount Kronios.
These works follow the scheduled completion and public opening of three previously restored monuments in April 2026: the Early Christian basilica (or Workshop of Pheidias), the Leonidaion Baths, and the Southern Baths. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni stated that Ancient Olympia is central to a long-term strategic plan to safeguard its unique monumental heritage. Funding is provided through the Western Greece Regional Operational Programme 2021–2027 and national resources.
