Ancient shipwreck discovered off Andros, Greece

Greek authorities have announced the discovery of an ancient merchant shipwreck off the coast of Andros. The site was initially reported by a private individual to the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.

Archaeological divers located the remains at depths between 122 and 144 feet. The vessel, which sank during the late fifth or early fourth century B.C., was found carrying between 600 and 650 amphoras. Experts identified at least three different types of commercial amphoras, which likely contained goods such as wine or olive oil.

The Ministry of Culture stated that the discovery is expected to significantly enhance the understanding of maritime trade and navigation during the late Classical period.
