Ancient submerged settlement discovered near Epidaurus

Archaeological remains of a submerged settlement have been identified in the Argolic Gulf near Ancient Epidaurus. Located in the harbor of Agios Vlasios, these underwater ruins include building foundations, road sections, and other structures that offer insight into the organization of the ancient settlement.

A significant feature of the site is a large building complex identified as a Roman villa rustica. Measuring approximately 40 by 15 meters and situated about 50 meters from the coast, this structure likely served as both a residence for wealthy owners and a center for managing agricultural production.

The Greek Ministry of Culture has implemented conservation programs for this maritime archaeological site. To enhance visitor experience, the ‘Periplous’ program uses technology to combine archaeology with modern viewing methods. Visitors can observe the remains through glass-bottomed boats and view 3D reconstructions to visualize the area as it appeared during the Roman era.
