Ancient textile found in Spello linked to Saint Francis
An ancient textile has been discovered within the Vallegloria monastery in Spello, Italy. Local tradition suggests the artifact was a gift from Saint Francis of Assisi to Blessed Balbina during a visit to the cenobium on Mount Subasio.
While the discovery has caused significant emotion within the monastic community and the Diocese of Foligno, the historical accuracy of the tradition remains unverified. Early Franciscan sources do not contain records of this specific encounter. Consequently, the textile will undergo scientific, historical-artistic, and diagnostic investigations to determine its true age, characteristics, and origin.
The official presentation of the find is scheduled for Friday, September 4, at 5:00 PM in the Vallegloria monastery church, following an EUcharistic celebration presided over by Bishop Felice Accrocca.
