Ancient Theatre of Messene to host Aristophanes’ ‘The Birds’

The Messene Theatre Workshop will present an adolescent production of Aristophanes’ classic comedy, ‘The Birds’, at the Ancient Theatre of Messene. The performance is scheduled for Monday, August 17, 2026, at 21:00, as part of the ‘MESSENE ENCOUNTERS 2026 – From Ithomaia to Bioma’ festival.

Directed by Eleni Efthaxopoulou and translated by Thrasyvoulos Stavrou, the production serves as the culmination of the workshop’s Youth Acting Group. The play explores themes of power, ambition, and the search for an ideal society through a contemporary lens, utilizing humor and musicality to address timeless questions about justice and human nature.

The event is organized by the Messene Theatre Workshop in collaboration with the Municipality of Messene, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia, the Peloponnese Region, and the Messenia Chamber of Commerce. Admission to the performance and the archaeological site is free of charge.
