Ancona Councilor sparks controversy with Gaza comparison

A motion introduced by Ancona City Councilor Maria Grazia De Angelis of Fratelli d'Italia has sparked significant political controversy following her comparison of the Gaza Strip to the Romagna Riviera. During a council session aimed at committing the city to defending persecuted Christians worldwide, De Angelis stated that areas where Christians face violence, imprisonment, and rape make Gaza appear like a ‘Riviera romagnola’ by comparison.

The inflammatory remark led to a walkout by center-left opposition members, who protested the comparison. The motion itself ultimately passed with 19 votes in favor and one abstention. The comments also drew criticism from Emilia-Romagna Governor Michele de Pascale, who expressed shock at the statement.

In response to the backlash, the Centro di Aiuto alla Vita di Loreto expressed support for the motion and the establishment of May 8 as a day of awareness for persecuted Christians in Ancona. The organization criticized the opposition's reaction as being driven by ideology and argued that the councilors' departure was an attempt to silence discussions on fundamental issues.
