Ancona healthcare facilities face staffing cuts and heatwave surges

Healthcare facilities in Ancona, Italy, are facing dual pressures from staffing changes and extreme weather. At the Salesi pediatric hospital, the removal of night-shift support staff has sparked concern among nursing personnel. Since August 1, the emergency department has operated with only three staff members during the night: one doctor, one nurse assisting the physician, and one nurse stationed at the triage desk. Staff report that the absence of support personnel increases their workload, as they must now perform tasks previously handled by the removed role.

Simultaneously, the Torrette emergency department is experiencing a 10% to 15% increase in patient visits due to ongoing heatwaves. Susanna Contucci, head of the emergency department, noted that while the influx aligns with national trends, the patients are increasingly vulnerable, including elderly individuals with chronic conditions and tourists suffering from heatstroke. This surge in admissions is contributing to a shortage of available hospital beds.
