Ancona launches registration for inaugural Palio event

Registration is officially open for the inaugural Palio di Ancona, scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 27. Inspired by major Italian palios, the event features 14 city districts competing in a relay race that combines land and sea elements, reflecting the historical connection between Ancona and the Adriatic Sea.

The competition consists of a 6 km footrace and a 1.5 km canoe segment. Participants will pass a torch-shaped baton every 900 meters. The final runner will deliver the baton to the district's lady at Piazza della Repubblica. The winning team will be determined by the lighting of a brazier and will receive a statue of the local heroine Stamira.

The event aims to promote active participation among local neighborhoods, enhance cultural traditions, attract tourism, and foster a sense of identity within the city.
