Ancona Mayor Luca Silvetti Confirms Bolignano Crematorium Project

Mayor Luca Silvetti of Ancona announced that the planned crematorium in Bolignano will go ahead despite local opposition, aiming to start construction within a year. The province issued the necessary AUA on 24 October 2024 and awarded contracts to Ubaldi Costruzioni for civil works (March 2025) and Officine Meccaniche Ciroldi for the furnace and related installations (April 2025). Though the contracts are currently suspended, they have not been cancelled.

The project's cost has risen from €2.5 million to roughly €2.8 million, with an additional €300 thousand required to relocate the gas supply. It will accommodate about 1,400 cremations annually, with the option to expand to 3,000. Cremation rates in the province have climbed from 9 % of deaths in 2010 to 44 % in 2023 (778 of 1,769 deaths). The province of Ancona lacks any crematorium, forcing families to travel elsewhere, while cemetery space and burial plots are increasingly scarce. Opponents, including local groups and the Democratic Party, have voiced dissent, but the mayor emphasised the technical suitability of the Bolignano site and dismissed calls for a veto.
