Andalucía implements advanced vaccination program and RSV campaign
The regional government of Andalucía has highlighted its vaccination program as one of the most comprehensive in Spain and among the most advanced in Europe, according to the Spanish Association of Pediatrics. The program is distinguished by its universal funding of certain vaccines, broader age ranges, and increased coverage.
As part of this initiative, an immunization campaign against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) launched on September 21. The campaign aims to protect over 55,000 infants this season. Rather than a traditional vaccine, the program administers nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody designed to protect against the virus that causes bronchiolitis.
Early data shows significant progress, with 17,000 infants immunized within the first ten days of the campaign, representing a 15% increase compared to the same period last year.
