Spain launches regional respiratory virus vaccination campaigns

Various Spanish regions are launching seasonal immunization campaigns for the 2026-2027 period, targeting influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

In Castilla y León, the campaign begins October 1 for institutionalized residents and children, expanding to the general public on October 13. A notable change includes expanding the pediatric influenza vaccination age to 11 years. The regional government has invested approximately 14.8 million euros in this effort.

Andalusia has initiated its RSV immunization campaign, focusing on infants and high-risk groups to prevent bronchiolitis. The program, which utilizes the monoclonal antibody nirsevimab, has a budget of 15.2 million euros. Authorities aim to match previous high coverage rates, noting that past campaigns have prevented thousands of hospitalizations.

In Galicia, the RSV campaign is also underway, targeting newborns and high-risk infants to reduce hospital admissions. Similarly, Aragon is starting its phased rollout, prioritizing elderly residents and pregnant women to optimize logistics and access.

In the Balearic Islands, health experts have warned of a potentially early start to the flu season, citing observations from the southern hemisphere.
