Andalucía reports rising skin cancer rates amid new melanoma therapy results

Andalucía is recording eight new cases of skin cancer every day. In 2025, the region's public health system documented 3,021 new melanoma diagnoses, resulting in a prevalence of approximately 34.39 cases per 10,000 inhabitants.

In medical developments, Moderna and Merck have reported positive Phase 3 results for an individualized mRNA neoantigen therapy known as autogene cevumeran. This treatment is designed for patients after melanoma has been surgically removed to prevent recurrence by training the immune system to recognize specific tumor mutations. When combined with the immunotherapy drug Keytruda (pembrolizumab), the therapy showed statistically significant improvements in recurrence-free survival for patients with stages IIB to IV melanoma. The clinical trials included participation from six Spanish hospitals, including the Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga.
