Andalusia and Extremadura confront unpaid public sector wages in Spain

In Andalusia, public employees have still not received the regional portion of their extra salary payments from 2013 and 2014, amounting to an average of about €2,000 per worker and a total estimated €750 million. The Central Independent Trade Union of Civil Servants (CSIF) is seeking to reopen the issue through a Popular Legislative Initiative that, if approved, would compel the Andalusian Parliament to consider a law to recover the withheld amounts.

In Extremadura, the CCOO union has denounced five months of unpaid salaries to workers of the Copergy facilities management company. The union demands payment of the outstanding wages and guarantees for job security, and has called a protest for 23 July in Mérida to pressure the regional government and the contractor.

Both cases illustrate ongoing disputes over unpaid public‑sector wages in Spanish regions, with unions mobilising legal and street actions to press authorities and employers for payment.
