Andalusia and medical experts launch initiatives to combat childhood obesity
The Regional Government of Andalusia has approved the ÓrbiTA Program, a specialized initiative designed to address childhood obesity, which currently affects one-third of minors in the region. The program reclassifies obesity as a chronic disease of adipose tissue rather than a mere aesthetic or weight issue. Detection will primarily occur during routine health check-ups starting at age two, with a guarantee of specific consultations within 15 days of identification. The plan includes individualized family-centered support and structured follow-up for up to 18 months.
In a separate medical development, the SEMERGEN National Congress in Santiago de Compostela highlighted the need for a coordinated approach between primary and hospital care. Medical experts emphasized that obesity must be treated as a complex chronic disease rather than a simple risk factor. While new effective pharmacotherapies are available, professionals noted ongoing challenges regarding public funding and the need to move beyond a sole reliance on Body Mass Index (BMI) for diagnosis and treatment.
