Andalusia cocaine trafficking rises as seizures surge

Cocaine trafficking is on the rise along the coasts of Andalusia, according to Spanish government officials. During the first eight months of 2026, authorities seized more than 21,000 kilograms of cocaine, a figure that represents approximately 78% of the total cocaine intercepted throughout the entirety of 2025.

In the province of Huelva, the scale of trafficking has increased significantly. Provisional reports indicate that at least 13 tons of cocaine have been intercepted so far in 2026, compared to 3,307 kilograms seized during the full year of 2025. This surge is forcing law enforcement to adapt to more sophisticated criminal methods, including changes in how large shipments are transferred from semi-submersible vessels to land.

While cocaine levels are rising, hashish remains the most frequently seized drug in the region. Under the V Special Security Plan for the Campo de Gibraltar, police operations in the six affected Andalusian provinces have led to thousands of arrests and the seizure of massive quantities of narcotics, fuel, and weapons.
