Andalusia demands equal trade rules for local farmers against imports

The Regional Government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía) is calling for equal competitive conditions for local farmers against agricultural imports from non-EU countries. During the V Andalusian Congress of Sanitary Law in Almería, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, stated that the sector is not seeking closed borders, but rather “the same rules for everyone” regarding environmental, labor, sanitary, and phytosanitary standards.

The administration argues that while Andalusia supports international trade and open markets, current practices can lead to unfair competition. European producers must adhere to high regulatory standards that imports from third countries may not be subject to, potentially impacting local profitability and consumer trust.

To address these imbalances, the Junta is demanding real reciprocity in international trade agreements through the implementation of “mirror clauses,” more effective import controls, and the activation of safeguard mechanisms when commercial imbalances are detected, particularly in sensitive sectors such as fruits and vegetables.
