Andalusia expands rail infrastructure with Almería high‑speed line and coastal extension to Motril

The Spanish central government highlighted the completion of the Almería high‑speed rail line as a flagship project of eight years of public administration in Andalusia. Deputy Government Representative Pedro Fernández reported a 31.5% drop in regional unemployment, a fall in the unemployment rate from 21.6% to 14.7%, and increased pension income and minimum wage levels. Investments from the EU Next Generation recovery plan total €9.1 billion, supporting around 240 000 beneficiaries and funding projects such as microchip design in Málaga, green hydrogen in Cádiz, aerospace testing in Huelva, a particle accelerator in Granada, and an army logistics base in Córdoba.

Separately, the Andalusian government announced that the planned coastal rail line linking Algeciras and Nerja will be extended in the regional territorial planning document (POTA) to reach Motril on the Granada coast, adding roughly 40 km and new stations at Almuñécar. The extension, championed by Transport Minister Rocío Díaz and supported by the Granada sub‑delegate José Antonio Montilla, aims to improve connectivity for the rapidly growing Port of Motril and address long‑standing transport gaps on the Costa Tropical.
