Andalusia high court calls for specialized drug trafficking courts
Lorenzo del Río, President of the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA), has warned that drug trafficking is becoming a “nearly structural cancer” in regions such as Cádiz, Seville, and Huelva. To combat the exponential rise in crime, Del Río has endorsed a proposal from the Cádiz Prosecutor's Office to establish specialized courts dedicated exclusively to drug trafficking cases.
Del Río also emphasized the need to accelerate the administrative destruction of seized assets, such as narco-boats, to prevent further harm. He noted that while the Campo de Gibraltar region has active citizen anti-drug platforms, other affected areas lack similar social movements to alert the public to the issue.
In a separate but related development regarding narcotics enforcement, former police inspector Óscar Sánchez Gil has made allegations of systemic corruption within the Drug and Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO). Speaking from prison, Sánchez Gil claimed the unit systematically misleads judges about the origins of its investigations to secure legal approval. He specifically alleged that information derived from encrypted phone platforms, such as Anom, was concealed from the judiciary during major operations, including a 2021 cocaine seizure in Algeciras.
