Andalusia launches reintroduction project for endangered Andalusian quail

The Junta de Andalucía has launched a major conservation project to reintroduce the Andalusian quail (Turnix sylvaticus sylvaticus) into the region. The species, which disappeared from the Iberian Peninsula in the last century, currently survives in very few numbers in Morocco.

Recently, 18 specimens arrived at the port of Algeciras from Morocco and were moved to the Zoobotánico Jerez Biodiversity Conservation Center. This facility will host an ex situ breeding program to prepare individuals for eventual release into their historical habitats. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, the regional Ministry of Environment, and private companies.

To ensure a healthy population with sufficient genetic variability and to avoid inbreeding, officials plan to conduct at least four additional collection campaigns in Morocco over the coming years.
