Spain launches regional RSV and influenza vaccination campaigns

Health authorities in Spain have launched seasonal vaccination campaigns targeting respiratory illnesses. In Andalusia, the regional government is investing 15.2 million euros to immunize approximately 55,000 infants against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), the primary cause of bronchiolitis. The campaign utilizes a single dose of nirsevimab and targets infants under six months, premature babies under twelve months, and children up to two years with specific health conditions.

In Andalusia, the program aims to maintain high coverage levels, noting that previous campaigns have immunized over 165,000 infants and prevented roughly 6,000 hospitalizations. The rollout includes appointments via primary care centers for babies born earlier in the year and direct immunization in maternity wards for those born later in the season.

Simultaneously, Castilla-La Mancha has initiated its influenza vaccination campaign. The regional health department has allocated funds for 540,500 total doses. This includes 340,000 adjuvanted vaccines specifically for individuals aged 60 and older to enhance immune response, 15,500 doses for children aged six to 23 months, and an additional 185,000 doses for high-risk groups under 60.
