Andalusia official rejects tourism tax proposal

Manuel Gavira, the Vice President of the Junta de Andalucía and Counselor of Tourism, has rejected the implementation of a tourism tax in the region. Speaking at the Feria de Málaga, Gavira described the tax as a “easy and reductionist” solution that could harm domestic tourism without providing proven improvements to public services.

Gavira argued that instead of creating new levies, the Spanish Government should consider reforming the local financing model to support cities with high visitor influxes. He emphasized that tourism is a vital economic engine for Andalusia, already contributing through VAT, income tax, and corporate tax.

This stance stands in contrast to requests from local leaders, such as the Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, who has advocated for a tourism tax to fund municipal needs, similar to models used in cities like Rome or Amsterdam.
