Andalusia: Re-evaluating the historical legacy of Blas Infante

Blas Infante, an influential figure assassinated in August 1936, has long served as a unifying symbol for Andalusian identity. Since the final years of the Franco regime, Andalusian politicians have utilized his biography and ideology to provide a historical reference point for the region.

However, the consolidation of Infante’s role as the ‘father of Andalusia’ may have inadvertently led to the marginalization of other significant historical figures and social movements. There is a call to re-examine the Andalusian past to recover the contributions of various movements and individuals that shaped the region’s social and cultural life over the last half-century, ensuring a more comprehensive understanding of its history.
